Save money on school supplies!
31.01.09 - 14:47 | Categorias: Conscious Consumption, Education, Media, Tips

Holiday spending is barely over and the list of school supplies has already arrived—and, what is worse: with a 15 percent increase! To avoid spending the rest of the year paying this bill, the first step is to reuse everything that is in good condition: folders, scissors, rulers, backpacks, lunch boxes and other items do not need to be replaced every year. When covered with some nice paper, that old notebook becomes new. Shop around on prices (use the Internet for this) and see if the school has any sort of special deals with any stores that provide discounts. Here are some other good tips for saving money:

- Leave your kid at home
It’s like going hungry to a supermarket: children in an office supplies shop only make the bill go up…

- Buy in groups
Get together with other parents and buy wholesale.  Sometimes, this can reduce prices by half.

- Get away from toys
Name brand materials or those featuring a toy are usually much more expensive.

- Don’t be in a hurry
The least expensive options run out faster on stores. Hit the stores as soon as possible.

The Lunch

– Carol, what’s that little package in the fridge?
– Hmmm…
– Carol?
– I’m out here!
– What are you doing there on the floor?
– Getting Tak’s lunch.
– Whose???
– Eustáquio’s.
– Eustáquio?
– Yep. What did you ask?
– There’s a package in the fridge…
– Don’t touch his food!
– Food? But it’s a very small package…. What’s in it? Peas?
– Well, I wish it was… But I’m the only vegetarian in this house.
– Carol, I’m sorry, but what’s that that you’re doing?
– Getting Estáquio’s lunch, Val. It’s hard. They escape from me. And I don’t want to kill anyone. He needs them alive. But, because he’s too small, he can’t eat them fast and the meal escapes. Because of that I put one in the fridge, to let it a little groggy. It’s almost as if it was put under. This way it’s less cruel.
– There are ants in the fridge?!?!?
– Just one, Vale. Don’t panic, I closed the package really well.
– There’s a living ant in the fridge?
– Asleep.
– I never worked for someone that kept living ants in packages in the fridge to feed a carnivorous plant!
– There’s always a first time …
– I want a raise.
PS: After a long and gloomy winter sponsored by Net, I’m back, missing you!

On foot

I don’t have a car for ten days. Repair shop. Recycle the old car or buy a new one? Stay without a car? And working at night, in a community that is not very safe? Isn’t it the moment to get rid of it? It’s something to think about.

I’m aware that a car, with 1.0 motor, like mine, that consumes fossil fuel, throws CO² to the Environment. And, in order to neutralize such emissions, I have two options: to plant a new tree to compensate the carbon dioxide or to walk and not throw it. There’s also the issue, very important, by the way, that the gasoline that you save when you leave your car at home, stops you from emitting 0,8 Kg of CO² per kilometre.

These days, carless, I’ve been walking on foot, by bus, by van, by ride.
It’s an experience that has done real good for me. I even thought about taking up walking again. I had forgotten how healthy, relaxing and stimulating it is, at the same time. Walking through the neighborhood I live and living up to the available services near home and not having to go so far to go shopping? It’s something to think about.
