To reach these people, Gigapica Geenstijl, a Dutch blog, has published a series of shocking images of environmental pollution.

These images are strong and alert us about our urgent need to be conscious while consuming and disposing goods, to recycle, and to preserve the planet.

After all, these photos make it very clear that it’s not only the environment that suffers with pollution. Humankind is a target of its own destruction.

SOS Mata Atlântica created this campaign to make people more aware of the need to avoid wasting water. In the Brazilian southeast region alone, this waste can be as high as 360 liters per day. And the largest amount of water is wasted in the bathroom: 80% of the water is wasted in the sink, during showers and, most particularly, in the toilet bowl.

If you pee under the shower every time you wash yourself, you’ll save 12 liters of water just by not flushing the toilet. In a household of three, this economy adds up to 36 liters per day, in case each one of them takes only one shower a day.

To join and publicize this campaign, answer this question honestly: “Do you pee during your shower?” on the campaign website, right here: http://www.xixinobanho.org.br/.

How a desalinization machine works
13.04.09 - 11:43 | Categorias: Uncategorized

In a world where more than 97% of the water available is salty, turning seawater into fresh water is something in which humankind has—for a long time—been interested on. This info graphics published by the Spanish edition of Super Interessante magazine explains how a company transforms seawater into fresh water.

There are over 15,000 desalinization machines in operation in the world, but they are costly. The big downside of the technology is the large amounts of energy it requires to transform the water. However, new developments in nanotechnology may be able to decrease production costs in up to 25% per liter, which could turn them into something feasible.

… by simply adopting rational water use. I thought that the amount they saved was so huge—even though I don’t know their total monthly consumption—and they did it by practicing actions so basic that everyone should do the same that I decided to post it.

The Fundação Parque Zoológico de São Paulo is the newest partner in the PURA Program (Program for the Rational use of Water) develop by Sabesp, the state water company. According to the institution, PURA targets the water demand by public and private establishments in the state of Sao Paulo.

The establishment adopts technological and awareness raising measures to deal with the scarcity of hydric resources. In the Zoo’s facilities, for instance, toilet bowls, faucets and drinking fountains have been replaced with devices that shut off the water automatically, so that no water is wasted. In addition, they carry out inspections to detect any water leaks—which is the least they can do!
